| Coming into the 2004-growing season
our soils were a bit dry. Block 7 was irrigated two weeks
before the buds on the vine started to swell to ensure adequate
moisture for bud-break. Mild weather as buds matured and similar
climate during flowering showed great promise for quality.
Consistent warm weather patterns all during the ripening season
were broken by a heat spike on Labor Day. This began the Pinot
Noir harvest season with a bang.
The grapes were brought into the winery
at full maturity with harvest sugars at approximately 25.5
brix. The fruit was soaked cold for 24 hrs. then inoculated
with yeast. Fermentation lasted for 7 days. The wine was then
pressed to older French oak barrels to complete malo-lactic
fermentation. When malo-lactic was complete the wine was racked
off the lees and left to mature in the barrel.
The 2004 Block 7 shows has a freshness
that shows off the fruit of the Pinot Noir. The aromatics
are reminiscent of rose petals with an essence of mulled spice.
The color shows the hue of ruby and the flavors are delightful.
Once in the glass all flavors show black cherry with a brisk
hint of cranberry. The wine has balance and elegance and will
keep your attention with generous layers of fruit. We are
proud of the quality that Block 7 delivers. This Pinot Noir
will complement dishes that are not too overpowering. Sauté
of poultry and fresh vegetables with the perfume of olive
oil as the contrast, will really show off this wine style.
Pour your glass as you dream up your meal and let this wine
guide you though the plan. Enjoy!
